The Stamford Current has shared breaking news with unique angles and in-depth coverage of ongoing developments in areas like education, housing, immigration, civic engagement, public safety, arts and culture, economic growth, and public health.

This coverage occasionally included news left uncovered by other outlets in the city and region, leaving the Current as the only source for keeping the public informed in an accurate and concise way.

Across platforms like Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter), we secured a vast and expanding following of individuals who actively engaged with content that evolved to reflect our audience and meet them where they were.

By the next presidential election in 2028, the majority of eligible voters will have been born after 1990. Fire & Ice Winter Festival

On Saturday, January 24, 2026, according to a press release, the Fire & Ice Winter Festival will take place at Columbus Park from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Held between Washington Boulevard and Main Street, the seasonal event will feature several exciting attractions, including cozy fire pits, ice sculpting by talented professional artists, and live music.

The occasion also provides an opportunity to explore nearby restaurants that will have indoor and outdoor dining experiences available.

Presented by the Stamford Downtown Special Services District, the Festival is produced in collaboration with media partners Hey Stamford!, Star 99.9, WEBE 108, and WICC.

After all votes are counted, the winners will be announced on Tuesday, January 6, 2026. The prize money awarded will go toward permanent spring façade improvements at the winning businesses in collaboration with Stamford Downtown.

The public can pick their top two favorites, one restaurant and one retailer, from now until Wednesday, December 24, at 5:00 pm on the Stamford Downtown website here. One entry is allowed per person.

Everyone who votes will automatically be entered to win a $100 Stamford Downtown Card, a digital gift card that can be redeemed at more than fifty downtown businesses. A winner will be randomly selected and then notified by email.

STAMFORD — The state’s top law enforcement officer is taking up a new position at the national level.

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong was elected to serve as president of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) during their annual Capital Forum meeting on Tuesday, December 9, in Washington, D.C.

NAAG, a national organization for collaboration among attorneys general from 56 states and territories, was founded in 1907.

“Now more than ever, I am honored by this unanimous and bipartisan support from attorneys general across the country. From Big Tech to Big Pharma, this role reflects and ensures Connecticut’s role at the front and center of all of the major multistate legal actions and efforts. For years, American families have been squeezed by high costs from all directions,” Tong said in a press release from his office. “This year, my Presidential Initiative will address how attorneys general can harness our law enforcement authority to drive down those costs. As we take on some of the biggest corporations and powerful forces, I am honored by this opportunity to lead both Democrats and Republicans in delivering for American families.”

In addition to Tong, the NAAG also elected three of his colleagues for other roles. South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley was chosen as president-elect, District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb was picked for vice president, and New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella will serve as immediate past president.

Under Tong’s leadership, the Connecticut Office of the Attorney General has focused on holding powerful industries like Big Pharma and Big Tech accountable for their actions through investigations and litigation nationwide. Meanwhile, Tong’s office has also worked throughout the state to protect consumers, strengthen civil and reproductive rights, and tackle issues like environmental protection and data privacy.

Carl R. Ajello and George Jepsen, two of Tong’s predecessors as Connecticut Attorney General, previously served as NAAG president from 1979 to 1980 and 2016 to 2017, respectively.

According to the NAAG, Tong is the first Asian American ever elected to statewide office in Connecticut and the first Chinese American elected as Attorney General in the entire nation’s history.

Tong, who was recognized in October by Governing Magazine as a 2025 Public Official of the Year, was first elected attorney general in 2018 and later reelected in 2022. Prior to that, he was a state representative for the 147th State House District in Stamford.

STAMFORD — Tens of thousands of state dollars are headed to a local nonprofit thanks to the city’s legislative delegation. Officials and community members gathered earlier this week to celebrate the announcement.

State Representative Eilish Collins Main of Stamford visited Pacific House on Tuesday, December 2, to share the news that the housing agency is receiving the funding, which state legislators secured after it was approved by the Connecticut General Assembly during this year’s session as part of the biennial state budget.

According to a press release, Pacific House will receive a total of $70,000 over the next two years with $35,000 being allocated each year in Fiscal Years 2026 and 2027.

“The funding for Pacific House is a major win to help the shelter expand its services and continue to provide quality support to those experiencing homelessness in Fairfield County, especially going into the winter season,” Collins Main said. “Pacific House provides essential resources to many individuals facing homelessness, and this additional funding will allow the organization to expand services and continue supporting residents in need. I am thrilled to deliver this funding to Pacific House during a critical time, and I am grateful for the legislature’s support to invest in Pacific House and its mission.”

The agency has been in operation for four decades and currently offers emergency shelter for both men and young adults. They also develop and operate permanent supportive housing for men, women, and families with children throughout Fairfield County.

Also in attendance was State Representative Kadeem Roberts of Norwalk, who serves as chair of the End Homelessness Caucus and discussed the importance of the additional disbursement to help address the region’s housing issues.

“This is a great victory in the fight to end homelessness in the state. Despite its reputation for being an affluent area, there are many people in Fairfield County who struggle to make ends meet. Pacific House has served our community well by doing tremendous work for individuals experiencing homelessness,” Roberts said. “This additional funding will allow them to expand their reach and provide assistance to more people in need.”

Pacific House’s operations include a total of 15 homes in Darien, Norwalk, and Stamford with more than 130 residents. The nonprofit seeks to increase stability and improve people’s lives through community partnerships, housing development, and supportive services.

“Pacific House is deeply grateful for this critical investment. These flexible funds will allow us to strengthen and expand our services, reaching more men, women, and families with children who are facing housing insecurity,” Pacific House President and CEO Carmen Colón said. “We thank the legislature for recognizing our work and helping us advance our mission to prevent and end homelessness in Fairfield County.”

STAMFORD — A holiday gathering is set for the city on Sunday, December 7, with an arrangement of seasonal attractions for residents and visitors to enjoy. Starting at 5:00 pm, spectators will get to experience Santa and other beloved characters rappelling downtown and additional opportunities.

To kick things off, Santa, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the Grinch, and others will descend from the Landmark Tower’s 22-story exterior starting at 5:00 pm.

A press release from the Stamford Downtown Special Services District stated that attendees will then be invited to view a fireworks display that will be held on Broad Street followed by a tree lighting ceremony with holiday music at Latham Park on Bedford Street.

Parking will be available at Bell Street Garage, Landmark Garage (via Atlantic Street), Stamford Town Center, and Summer Street Garage.

Winter Lighting Program

In addition to the Heights & Lights festivities, Stamford Downtown announced an expanded Winter Lighting Program for the downtown neighborhood.

Produced by the Pearl River, New York-based Christmas Lighting Company, the display offers a vibrant landscape with almost 300,000 multi-color and warm-white LED lights for residents, workers, and visitors to view.

This year, several enhancements were made, including:

• Decorative lamp posts and trees set up along Greyrock Place.

• Enhanced décor around Bedford Street Garage, such as snowflakes illuminated at the main entrance and garland with twinkle lights at the secondary entrance and tunnel entry/exit by the exterior parking area.

• Six traffic signal poles wrapped from base to arm in white and red in patterns to resemble candy canes.

• A trio of oversized decorative light bulbs installed in the UConn Stamford raised vegetable garden.

Meanwhile, some returning elements and other aspects include:

• Nearly seven dozen street trees covered with approximately 1,700 lights each along Atlantic, Bedford, Atlantic, Main, and Summer Streets.

• Special lighting installed throughout Latham Park and Kiwanis Park.

• Multi-color displays on two grand oak trees at the Ferguson Library and in Columbus Park, the latter of which features 63,000 lights.

• Installations along North State Street between Atlantic Street and Washington Boulevard as well as on Broad Street at UConn Stamford, Target, and The Asher.

• Festoon lighting across Clark Street leading to the Bell Street Garage.

The lighting program will last from mid-November through mid-March.

STAMFORD — The Stamford Chamber of Commerce is kicking off December with two events celebrating the holiday season at local restaurants. Each opportunity will offer attendees a chance to connect and network in a festive atmosphere.

Holiday Lunch

On Thursday, December 4, the Stamford Chamber will host their 2025 Holiday Lunch at Zody’s 19th Hole (451 Stillwater Road) with registration beginning at 11:30 am and the lunch following from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm.

The meal will be served as a buffet while featuring mixed green salad, rigatoni pomodoro, and marsala and eggplant tollatini. Soft drinks, coffee, and tea will also be provided.

STAMFORD — With the holiday season fast approaching, a major parade organized by the Stamford Downtown Special Services District and the City of Stamford is returning once again this Sunday, November 23.

From preparation and floats to logistics and performances, here’s what to know.

Balloon Inflation Party

On Saturday, November 22, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, the area around Hoyt Street and Summer Street will be the scene for the annual Point72 Giant Balloon Inflation Party.

At the event, which has been hosted in partnership with Stamford-based Point72 Asset Management since 2014, attendees will get to see the balloons up close while enjoying a selection of music and greeting with various clowns and cartoon characters as well as Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Among the 2025 performers will be Flippenout Extreme Trampoline show, a unique entertainment team comprised of “top athletes from North America including Olympic Medalists, National Champions, National Team Members, Ninja Warriors, professional action sports athletes, Olympic Hopefuls, and top tier show professionals,” according to their website.

Stamford Downtown stated in an announcement that Flippenout Extreme Trampoline will show off their skills at the party before appearing in the parade the following day.

Attractions and Floats

Organizers with Stamford Downtown are expecting a crowd of more than 100,000 spectators to stretch out along the parade route.

The popular Stamford Public Schools float will feature 2025 Teacher of the Year George Rigakos of Westover Magnet School and 2025 Paraeducator of the Year Ronnie Griggs of Stillmeadow Elementary School under the theme of “Empowering Without Powers.”

In addition to fan favorites like Clifford the Big Red Dog, Curious George, Elmo, Jonathan the Husky, Mr. Potato Head, Oscar the Grouch, Rudolph, Shrek, and Super Grover new balloons, including Ariel the Zoonicorn, Bumble the Abominable Snowman, and Neko Good Fortune Cat will also make appearances.

Performances will be provided by Fairfield County Pipes & Drums, the New York Police Department Emerald Society Pipe & Drum Band, and high school marching bands from Brentwood, Westhill, Uniondale, and Wyandanch.

There will also be new additions to the parade for 2025, including Ballet Folklórico de las Américas (BFAmericas), the Ballet School of Stamford, and the Pride of Port Chester High School Marching Band.

Other talented groups taking part are Center Stage Dance Studio, City Center Dance Performing Company, Dance on the DL, Locust Performing Arts Center of Stamford, and The Pulse Performing Arts Studio, the Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard, and Santa Clause.

Colin Cosell, public address announcer for the New York Mets and New York Riptide, will be back to serve as master of ceremonies for the parade.

Logistical Details

The parade itself will kick off at noon on Sunday, going from Summer Street toward Broad Street before turning onto Atlantic Street and Federal Street, and is expected to last about two hours.

All downtown parking for the parade is free. This includes several parking lots, such as Bell Street, Bedford Street, Government Center, Summer Place, UConn Parking, and other nearby garages. A list with the streets closed for the parade route is available here.

As of publishing, the National Weather Service forecast predicts a high of 46º and a low of 32º while partly cloudy for Sunday.

STAMFORD — Just over a week since Democrats saw historic wins in elections across Connecticut and beyond, the state’s chief executive is all in on serving another four more years.

After filing the necessary paperwork last week, Governor Ned Lamont made it official on Friday, November 14, that he is running with Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz for a third term in office.

Focusing on Affordability

In his announcement video, Lamont contrasted the state’s economic situation when he took office compared to the progress made since then under his administration.

He then emphasized key accomplishments and policy issues that he intends to highlight during the campaign, including the creation of more jobs while aiming to lower taxes, childcare costs, and housing costs.

Lamong also pitched a plan to decrease healthcare costs through a “Connecticut Option,” and energy bills by promoting diversity in electricity production sources such as wind, solar, nuclear, and potentially natural gas.

“We’ve come a long way, but the job’s not done,” Lamont said at the end of the video. “Let’s keep Connecticut moving forward. Together.”

Statewide Tour

The online launch was followed on Friday by stops in each of the state’s congressional districts echoing the themes mentioned in the launch video.

First, it was Bridgeport, where he held a roundtable on workforce development, and New Haven, where he met up with Mayor Justin Elicker and visited BAR for some of their popular pizza.

Then the Governor and his entourage made a visit to Groton with Congressman Joe Courtney, environmental activists, and building trades unions to focus on energy policy and their efforts fighting back against the Trump Administration, particularly when a mostly completed off-shore wind project was halted in late August.

After that, the statewide tour continued in Hartford, where they discussed the urgency of tackling rising healthcare costs.

The final stop was in Waterbury, where Lamont was joined by Congresswoman Jahana Hayes, Mayor Paul Pernerewski, Jr., and other campaign supporters for a launch party at Brass Works Brewing Company.

Tracking the Race

Lamont, whose approval rating sits at 63% according to a recent Morning Consult poll, will first have to face progressive State Representative Josh Elliott of Hamden, who is also vying for the Democratic nomination.

The Republican field for governor includes conservative State Senator Ryan Fazio of Greenwich, whose district covers a portion of Stamford, and former New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart, who proudly embraces the MAGA brand.

Fazio is a declared candidate while Stewart currently remains in the exploratory phase with a formal campaign launch expected in the near future.

STAMFORD — Mirroring results statewide and all over the country, Democrats were victorious in Tuesday’s municipal elections.

From the mayor’s race to the contest for constable and everything in between, here’s what you need to know.

Mayor

Incumbent Caroline Simmons sailed to reelection with about two-thirds of the vote, despite a crowded field which also included perennial Republican candidate Nicola Tarzia, a former Board of Education member, and three write-in candidates, David Cherniack, Fritz Chery, and Michael T. Loughran, Jr.

According to results provided by the Secretary of the State’s office, Simmons acquired 15,829 votes on the Democratic Party line and 676 votes on the Independent Party line for a combined total of 65.53% of the vote. Tarzia received 7,874 votes or 31.27% and the trio of write-in candidates obtained the remaining 3.2% of the vote.

In remarks after polls closed, Simmons, the city’s first woman mayor, applauded the efforts of volunteers and reflected on the historic outcome, in part noting that Democrats got a “clean sweep” in winning every single Board of Representatives (BOR) seat.

The result “sends a message to the state and to the country that we’re going to continue to lean into our values as Democrats and to continue to work to become a city that is more inclusive, equitable and affordable for everyone,” Simmons said, as reported by Ignacio Laguarda of the Stamford Advocate.

Town Clerk

In the race for Town Clerk, Democrat David Hoak won in a three-way competition with incumbent Lyda Ruijter on the Independent line and Gerald Bosak running as a Republican.

In the end, Hoak secured some 12,939 votes or 52.90% followed by Bosak with 7,978 votes or 32.62% and then Ruijter with 3,541 votes or 14.48%.

Board of Education

Due to Connecticut General Statutes § 9-167a, a state rule requiring minority representation on some city boards, Democrats could only win two seats in the Board of Education race. Four Democrats already serve on the board and they are not able to have more than six members out of the nine total seats for elected members.

Democratic candidates included newcomers Dr. Jennifer Werely, a recent PTO president at Turn of River Middle School and mother of three children in the Stamford Public Schools (SPS) district, and Adam Vandervoort, a corporate attorney who recently had children in Stamford schools, as well as current Board of Education President Michael Hyman.

For the Republicans, Kristopher O’Brien, general manager for an electrical and generator department at a home services company with three children in the SPS system, and Dennis LoDolce, an assistant for the city’s Road Maintenance Division, ran to serve on the Board.

After results were tallied, Werely ended up with 15,275 votes on the Democratic line and 2,426 votes on the Independent line for a total of 27.81% of the overall vote. Werely’s overall 17,701 votes were the most for any candidate on the ballot. Following her was Vandervoort with 13,798 votes or 21.68% of the total and Hyman with 13,707 votes or 21.54% of the total.

On the Republican and Independent lines, O’Brien received a combined 9,296 votes or 14.61% of the total and LoDolce got 9,140 votes or 14.36% of the total.

Werely, Vandervoort, and O’Brien will be the newest members of the Board of Education.

Board of Finance

Democrats running for the Board of Finance were current BOF chairman Richard Freedman as well as newcomers Kimberly Gustin, an economist working in compliance and risk sales who serves as a community leader with Indivisible Stamford, and Christopher Malloy, a former banker and current building company executive who serves as a member of the Democratic City Committee (DCC).

Republicans Jennifer Munger, Tom Dougherty, and Kate Lombardo also ran for the Board of Finance. Munger is a senior director of technical accounting and tax at Cumming Group, Dougherty is a member of the city’s Board of Appraisal Appeals, and Lombardo is former executive director of The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County Food Bank.

Similarly for the Board of Finance, the state’s minority representation rule meant that Democrats would only win one seat this time, which went to Freedman after he won with 14,652 votes and 21.28% of the total.

Malloy obtained 14,494 votes or 21.05% followed by Gustin, who received 14,430 votes or 20.96%.

The two remaining seats went to Munger, who got 8,624 votes and 12.52% of the total, and Dougherty, who secured 8,350 votes and 12.13% of the vote.

Board of Representatives

Since the Board of Representatives districts are based on geographical data, the minority representation rule does not apply so Democrats will soon hold every seat across the twenty districts when the new term starts.

Republicans lost their remaining three seats on the city’s legislative body this cycle. Minority Leader Mary Fedeli of District 17 and David Watkins of District 1 were both unsuccessful in their reelection campaigns. Fellow Republican Thomas Kuczynski opted not to run again.

The names of BOR winners for each district are bolded.

District 1:

• Tom Bouchard (D) - 995 votes and 30.73%

• Steven Shore (D) - 872 votes and 26.93%

• David Watkins (R) - 710 votes and 21.93%

• Julia Anderson (R) - 609 votes and 18.81%

• Alfonso R. Hernandez (I) - 52 votes and 1.61%

District 2:

• Virgil de la Cruz (D) - 485 votes and 41.31%

• Lori Hyatt (D) - 469 votes and 39.95%

• Jason Kinard (R) - 171 votes and 14.57%

• Heidy J. Balderamos (I) - 49 votes and 4.17%

District 3:

• Chanta Graham (D) - 448 votes and 41.95%

• Terry Adams (D) - 467 votes and 43.73%

Constable

With all seven Constable seats up this year, Democrats could retain their majority with four seats. The DCC endorsed incumbents Jon Gallup, Robert Miller, and Tiffany Pippins as well as newcomer Angie Murphy, an employee benefits administrator.

Republicans endorsed incumbents Eva Maldonado, Alan Shaw, and Joseph Tarzia as well as newcomer Jonathan Portanova, a part-time gym manager.

Another candidate, Cora Santaguida, ran with the Green Party.

Murphy came in first among Constable candidates with 14,838 votes or 16.93% of the total followed by Miller with 13,946 votes and 15.91%, Pippins with 13,892 votes and 15.85%, and Gallup with 13,408 votes and 15.30%.

The last three seats went to Republicans Tarzia with 7,982 votes and 9.11%, Maldonado with 7,784 votes and 8.88%, and Portanova with 7,771 votes and 8.87%.

There’s an increasingly persistent narrative that Stamford is under one-party rule. It’s easy to see why. The mayor is a Democrat. Most of our state delegation is Democratic. The majority of our local boards are too — and some Republicans only serve because Connecticut’s minority party law guarantees them seats at the table.

So yes, Stamford looks like a one-party city. The convenient explanation is that Democrats have rigged the system. But that claim doesn’t hold up. What’s really going on isn’t a conspiracy — it’s a collapse of competition.

Where’s the Opposition?

The Stamford Republican Town Committee endorsed only 20 candidates for 40 Board of Representatives seats, and two candidates for three open Board of Education seats. That’s not a full slate — it’s a half-hearted effort.

Even more troubling is the quality of the top of the ticket. The Republican candidate for mayor has no executive experience, a habit of running for whatever office happens to be open, and a past arrest for cocaine possession (a charge later dismissed and expunged). None of this inspires confidence that voters are being offered a serious alternative to the incumbent administration.

But this isn’t just a Republican problem. Stamford’s lack of choice runs deeper than party lines.

Independent Isn’t Enough

The city hasn’t seen a credible non-Democratic challenge since Bobby Valentine’s 2021 unaffiliated run. To appear on the ballot, Valentine had to collect 188 valid signatures, a modest hurdle that demonstrated organization and community support.

Compare that to the current “fill-in” candidates, who couldn’t even gather enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. If they can’t find 188 supporters willing to sign a petition, how would they ever win the thousands of votes needed to lead the city?

That’s not one-party rule — that’s one party competing while the others barely try.

Democracy Without Debate

Healthy democracy depends on competition, debate, and accountability. When the same party holds every seat, it’s easy to blame political machines or voter apathy. But in Stamford, the truth is more uncomfortable: voters aren’t rejecting alternatives — they’re not being offered any.

Political diversity doesn’t require chaos; it requires courage. We need candidates — from any background, party, or no party at all — who are willing to step forward with ideas, build coalitions, and do the hard work of running. Democracy only thrives when voters have real choices, not just names filling space on a ballot.

The Real Problem Isn’t Rule — It’s Resignation

Until Stamford’s opposition parties — and independents — start organizing, recruiting, and campaigning seriously, this “one-party city” narrative will remain self-fulfilling. You can’t claim one-party dominance if no one else shows up to play.

The problem isn’t that one party rules Stamford. The problem is that no one else is really trying.

STAMFORD — A community organization is planning an evening to recognize the importance of engaging young residents through arts and music as part of their mission. On Friday, November 14, PROJECT MUSIC will convene a performance of a popular musical at Stamford CoCreate with proceeds benefitting their work to provide students with life skills through music.

From 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm, the organization’s 11th Anniversary Gala will be held in partnership with the Tee & Charles Addams Foundation and include the Addams Family Musical, which is celebrating fifteen years, with Broadway performers and professional artists serving in roles alongside some of PROJECT MUSIC’s own students.

According to a press release, the musical “will feature Broadway star Rachel Potter, who made her Broadway debut as Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family. During her time on Broadway, she shared the stage with legends Bebe Neuwirth and Brooke Shields.” Potter will be joined by Liam Gelling and Eliza Heaton as Gomez Addams and Morticia Addams, respectively.

“Our upcoming Gala is going to be a ‘one of a kind’ event. With The Addams Family as our theme, we will have musical selections by Broadway Stars and our own talented PROJECT MUSIC students performing. STAMFORD — Businesses in the city will have an opportunity to connect during a gathering being planned by the Stamford Chamber of Commerce. The 2nd Annual B2B Expo will be held on Thursday, October 30, at the Residence Inn by Marriott Stamford Downtown in the Atlantic Room on the second floor.

From 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, attendees will get to meet with and hear from a wide selection of Stamford companies and organizations to learn about their brands and impact on the communities served.

There are two different levels listed for participating as an exhibitor, an option only open to members of the Chamber of Commerce. One is priced at $300. A second one is $350 and includes access to electrical outlets, but is already sold out.

STAMFORD — Local activists are preparing for a follow-up this weekend to a protest held in June that saw around 5,000 people peacefully assemble to advocate for democratic values and oppose authoritarian actions recently taken at the federal level.

Indivisible Stamford, a chapter in the city of a national organization focused on civic engagement and grassroots activism, is planning a “No Kings” rally to be held on Saturday, October 18, at Judicial District Court (123 Hoyt Street) followed by a march through downtown Stamford. The event description states that it will start at noon and continue until 2:00 pm.

Among the anticipated speakers for Saturday’s gathering in Stamford are Connecticut State Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) and Connecticut Education Association Vice President Joslyn DeLancey.

The national website for the protests planned across the country provides further context on the reasoning behind a second “No Kings” protest.

“In June, millions of everyday Americans from every walk of life peacefully took to the streets and declared with one voice: No Kings. The world saw the power of the people, and President Trump’s attempt at a coronation collapsed under the strength of a movement rising against his abuses of power,” the website states in part. “Now, he’s doubling down — sending militarized agents into our communities, silencing voters, and handing billionaires giveaways while families struggle. This isn’t just politics. It’s democracy versus dictatorship. And together, we’re choosing democracy.”

Indivisible Stamford is partnering on the event with several groups in the region, including Good Trouble Norwalk, ReSisters, Indivisible CT4 (ICT4), Stamford Norwalk United for Immigrants, Women on Watch (WOW), and the Working Families Party.

Similar rallies are set to take place from coast to coast at an estimate of over 2,500 locations with about 40 of the events occurring throughout Connecticut.

At the national level, partner organizations include the ACLU, American Federation of Teachers, Indivisible, League of Conservation Voters, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, Reproductive Freedom for All, and SEIU.

The previous “No Kings” gathering in Stamford was convened on Saturday, June 14, with thousands of people showing up to make their voices heard. Additionally, Indivisible Stamford organized a March protest against Elon Musk at the local Tesla dealership with around 300 people in attendance and an estimated 5,000 protesters showed up for a “Hands Off” march held in April.

Hello Lamp Post

Stamford Downtown created a new initiative called Hello Lamp Post to enhance access and assistance for people in the downtown area to learn about construction, discover places to grab a coffee, or check out local events.

According to a press release, residents, workers, and visitors are able to take part in friendly, text-based conversations with signs by scanning a QR code placed on benches, planters, bus shelters, and more spaces. No application download, sign-up fees, or registration are required to participate.

“Hello Lamp Post will provide another tool by which Stamford Downtown can communicate with residents, students, commuters and visitors,” Stamford Downtown President Michael Moore said. “Hello Lamp Post will help Stamford Downtown to provide a wide variety of information about events, construction updates, residential and new business openings by merely accessing the many QR codes that we will install throughout our city center.”

Phase 1 began on Thursday, September 18, and lasted two weeks during a trial period for Stamford Downtown staff to collect and analyze data around usage and interactions with the new service before making any necessary updates accordingly in response to questions or inquiries.

The announcement indicated that Stamford Downtown will continue to refine and enhance the experience moving forward.

WineFest on Bedford

WineFest on Bedford, an annual tradition bringing together wine lovers and vendors, will be back on Saturday, October 18, from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm in Latham Park on Bedford Street and featuring more than two dozen wine vendors.

A press release from Stamford Downtown stated that admission is $40 per person if purchased by no later than Friday, October 17. If tickets are still available, the price rises to $50 when purchased the day of the event.

A tasting glass, unlimited wine tastings (while supplies last), and entertainment are included with the cost of the ticket.

There is a limited supply of VIP tickets available, offering “unique sampling opportunities and entry an hour prior to general admission,” for an additional $10 per ticket, the advisory stated.

No pets are allowed and Stamford Downtown is encouraging attendees “to drink responsibly and know your limits.”

Food vendors, including Amazing Momo CT, Grazing Charcuterie Bar, The Sushi Class, and other businesses, will be in attendance.

Craft vendors on hand will be the Hey Stamford! Store, Northeast Vinegar, Plain and Fancy Boutique, and Whimsical Wicks.

There will also be lawn games as well as music by Dive Bar Confessional, a local band that plays popular hits from the 1980s to the 2000s and today.

Stamford Downtown Parade Spectacular

On Sunday, November 23, the Stamford Downtown Parade Spectacular, the city’s beloved holiday parade, will make its annual return from Hoyt and Summer Streets at noon down to Atlantic Street and Federal Street with an expected audience of 100,000 people in the crowd along the route.

There will be at least 15 giant balloons, including Bumble the Abominable Snowman, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Elmo, Mistletoe the Snowman, Mr. Potato Head, Oscar the Grouch, Peppa Pig, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Shrek, and Super Grover, with others to be announced.

Performances will be provided by Fairfield County Pipes & Drums, the New York Police Department Emerald Society Pipe & Drum Band, and high school marching bands from Brentwood, Westhill, Uniondale, and Wyandanch.

There will also be new additions to the parade for 2025, including Ballet Folklórico de las Américas (BFAmericas), the Ballet School of Stamford, and the Pride of Port Chester High School Marching Band.

Other talented groups that will take part include Center Stage Dance Studio, City Center Dance Performing Company, Dance on the DL, Locust Performing Arts Center of Stamford, and The Pulse Performing Arts Studio, various floats, the Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard, and Santa.

Colin Cosell, New York Mets and New York Riptide public address announcer, will once again serve as master of ceremonies for the parade.

The day before the parade, on Saturday, November 22, the Point72 Giant Balloon Inflation Party will be held from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the intersection of Hoyt Street and Summer Street. The pre-parade gathering, hosted by Stamford-based Point72 Asset Management since 2014, offers a unique look behind the scenes at balloons as they grow in size ahead of the big day.

During the pre-parade event, spectators will be greeted by cartoon characters, music, parade participants, and Santa.

Local boards of education are among the most important — and least understood — institutions in our democracy. They ensure that public schools reflect community values, operate transparently, and serve all students well.

School board members are volunteers — neighbors and parents who give their time to govern, not to manage. Our role is to set goals, pass the budget, supervise the superintendent, and monitor policy. We are expected to act as a team on behalf of students and families, not as partisans or individuals advancing personal agendas.

That’s why the most important question voters should ask about school board candidates this November is if they will work collaboratively with others to put students first.

Why Collaboration Matters

Effective school boards depend on collaboration. When members respect each other, listen, and build trust, the board can focus on what really matters: student success. Collaboration doesn’t mean agreement on every issue. It means being willing to engage in honest dialogue, learn from data, and compromise to move the district forward.

Members who are curious, prepared, and respectful model the very values we teach in our schools. The best boards use evidence, not emotion, to make decisions and understand that good governance requires humility, discipline, and teamwork.

What Gets in the Way

Unfortunately, in Stamford, collaboration has too often been undermined by partisanship and political posturing.

During board meetings, it’s not unusual to see the local Republican Party chair sitting in the audience and beckoning board members for side conversations in the hallway, or even in the board room, during meetings. That kind of interference is inappropriate and erodes public trust.

Regular blanket accusations against the “majority party” don’t demonstrate a willingness to listen or learn. They create a contentious atmosphere that discourages problem-solving and drives wedges where bridges should be built.

We’ve also seen 6–3 (6 Democrats, 3 Republicans) votes on key district issues — votes that should have been unanimous in support of our teachers and students. The board’s approval of the budget, which included essential raises for teachers, and support for the revised construction specifications for the new Westhill High School were both examples where division distracted from progress. These decisions were based on teacher feedback and state funding requirements, not politics, and yet they became politicized anyway.

Even more discouraging, a Republican board member who consistently listened, collaborated, and voted based on data was later ousted as chair of their party and denied an endorsement to run for re-election. That sends a chilling message: collaboration, even when principled, can come at a political cost. And that’s exactly the opposite of what our students need from us.

The Work Ahead

If Stamford wants to attract strong leadership, including a top-notch superintendent, the board must show that it can operate professionally and cohesively. The best superintendent candidates will be evaluating us just as we evaluate them. They will look for a board that supports its superintendent, works constructively, and speaks with one voice about student success.

Strong candidates will avoid districts where meetings are divisive, votes are politically split, and members attack one another in the press. A fractured board discourages good leaders from applying — and that ultimately hurts students.

What to Look for in a Board of Education Candidate

As voters consider school board candidates, it’s worth focusing on temperament, teamwork, and professional expertise.

The best board members:

• Put students first in every decision.

• Are collaborative, even when they disagree.

• Come prepared, curious, and ready to learn.

• Use data, not anecdotes, to guide decisions.

• Build relationships across differences.

• Respect the boundary between governance and administration.

• Bring relevant professional expertise, such as experience in education, law, accounting, or community-based leadership, to strengthen the board’s capacity for informed, balanced decision-making.

• Approach their work with integrity, humility, and a solutions-oriented mindset.

In short: we need people who can work well with others and bring knowledge that complements, rather than competes with, the district’s educators and administrators.

A Call to Lead by Example

Our students are watching us. They notice whether we listen, compromise, and treat others with respect.

If we want to prepare them to thrive in a diverse, democratic society, we must model that behavior ourselves. Stamford deserves a Board of Education that governs collaboratively, communicates respectfully, and always keeps students — not politics — at the center of every decision.

STAMFORD — A handful of community events are scheduled for this month, allowing interested residents a chance to hear from leading candidates ahead of the city elections. With absentee ballots now available, early voting in just over two weeks, and Election Day soon after that, here’s what you need to know about upcoming events for the mayoral campaign.

October 7

On Tuesday, October 7, the State Street Debating Society is hosting a debate with the mayoral candidates, including incumbent Democrat and Independent candidate Caroline Simmons as well as Republican Nicola Tarzia.

The event, open to Society members and the general public, will be at The Waters Edge Giovanni’s. It will feature a cocktail hour from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm with a cash bar followed by dinner at 7:00 pm.

According to information provided to the Stamford Current, the debate will begin at 7:45 pm.

October 8

In partnership with the League of Women Voters (LWV), the Ferguson Library will have a forum at the Main Library branch in the Dudley N. Williams, Jr. Auditorium on Wednesday, October 8, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. It will also include both Simmons and Tarzia, who will answer questions received before and during the event.

October 9

The Stamford Education Association (SEA) will hold an education-focused forum at the Academy of Information Technology & Engineering (AITE) on Thursday, October 9, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

A digital flyer for the event indicated that this will feature candidates for mayor as well as the Board of Education. It is listed as an opportunity “[f]or educators, parents, and community members to hear directly from the candidates on their vision for our schools and city.”

October 16

Simmons and Tarzia will participate in a moderated panel discussion that the Stamford Chamber of Commerce is convening on Thursday, October 19, from 8:00 am to 10:00 am at The Town Hall at 677 Washington.

Registration will begin alongside a continental breakfast at 8:00 am followed by the debate at 9:00 am. The focus, the Chamber’s website stated, will be on how to retain the growth seen over the last decade in the city. Topics will include affordable housing, improving infrastructure, education, mental health & homelessness, public safety, services, taxes, and transportation.

STAMFORD — A nonprofit Fairfield County organization offering health, education, and human service programs has opened a new school-based health center (SBHC) in the city as the latest resource for young residents. Students, staff, and Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) were on site to recognize the occasion with a ribbon cutting.

On Monday, September 22, local officials celebrated alongside Himes, who previously secured a $1 million federal grant to help with the project, as Family Centers unveiled the new asset for students at Turn of River Middle School.

Family Centers CEO Louis Josephson and Chief Health Officer Dennis Torres joined Stamford Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Tamu Lucero and Turn of River Principal Mark Bonasera at the ceremony. Also in attendance were city representatives Janeene Freeman, Special Assistant to Mayor Caroline Simmons, and Jodi Bishop-Pullan, Stamford’s Director of Health and Human Services.

According to a press release from Family Centers, the new facility, which “was built in an unused locker room,” will provide medical services in addition to the mental health support currently offered.

Family Centers operates nine different SBHCs throughout the Stamford school district with dental professionals, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, social workers, and other personnel.

Plans for a health facility at Turn of River Middle School were announced in October 2024. Among its locations across the region, the agency has an office on Bedford Street.

STAMFORD — A beloved downtown event will be back on Saturday, September 20, with almost five dozen art exhibitors and more. From 10:00 am to 6:30 pm, Arts & Crafts on Bedford will offer attendees a chance to view and purchase items from a selection of local and regional artists.

According to a press release from the Stamford Downtown Special Services District, there will be “juried artisans from throughout the northeast who will display and sell juried works including Ceramics, Fiber Arts, Fine Art, Jewelry, Metal, Photography, Painting, Wood, and more.”

Last held in mid-June, the event will also have the return of the Friends Book Shop’s popular sidewalk sale. It will be held outside of the Ferguson Library’s DiMattia Building main branch from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm with all profits going to support the Library’s programs and services.

An Instagram post by the Friends Book Shop said that they will feature “an amazing selection of books about art, architecture, cooking, crafts & hobbies, fashion, home & garden, photography, music, and more. Plus, a wide variety of books for kids and puzzles for all ages.”

Items available for purchase will be 50-75% off the original retail prices. Apple Pay, cash, checks, and credit or debit cards are all acceptable payment options.

STAMFORD — A slate of candidates endorsed by the city’s Democratic Party won all of the six primaries for the Board of Representatives (BOR), according to unofficial results from the Secretary of the State. The group, which includes nine first-time contenders, will now move on to the general election.

The Stamford Democratic City Committee (DCC) endorsed candidates for positions on the ballot this election cycle during a July 20 meeting. However, candidates for the Board of Representatives in six districts submitted enough signatures from voters to require primaries in Districts 5, 6, 8, 10, 13, and 17 to select the Democratic nominees.

Absentee ballots became available to request on Tuesday, August 19, and early voting was held in the Stamford Government Center 4th Floor Cafeteria from Tuesday, September 2, to Sunday, September 7. The Primary Election Day was Tuesday, September 9.

According to the Stamford DCC, turnout was 12% citywide with 1,165 ballots cast in total across all six districts. Candidates supported by the DCC joined the 2025 Endorsed Democrats slate and subsequently won all of their races.

District 5

Newcomers Nicole Beckham, a lifelong Stamford resident and community leader, and Kierra Dorsey, a Connecticut Judicial Branch worker who volunteers with Charter Oak Communities, bested incumbent Bonnie Kim Campbell, who was first elected in 2021.

Beckham and Dorsey received 122 votes and 103 votes respectively while Campbell got 51 votes.

District 6

Neighboring District 6 elected newcomers Ryan Hughes, who works on the state’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Team, and Parker Johnson, who is employed in the energy industry, over incumbent Denis Patterson, who joined the BOR in 2015, and Lindsey Miller, a former BOR member for District 7 who served from 2015 to 2024.

Hughes and Johnson received 149 votes and 130 votes respectively. Miller obtained 33 votes followed by Patterson with 24 votes.

District 8

Theo Gross, statewide scheduler for U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and Matthew Yeager, who has a background in the arts sector, won in their district with divisive incumbent Anabel Figueroa losing her second election in as many years.

Yeager and Gross received 87 votes and 85 votes respectively. Figueroa, who has represented the district since 2001 and was defeated in her 2024 State House reelection bid, got 45 votes.

District 10

Voters in District 10 chose Felix Gardner, who works for a software company, and Stephanie Sylvestre, an educator and social worker, over Brittany Lawrence, a local housing activist.

Gardner and Sylvestre obtained 138 and 127 votes respectively while Lawrence got 86 votes.

District 13

In District 13, incumbents Amiel Goldberg, who has served on the Board since 2021, and Eric Morson, who first joined the BOR in 2017, defeated Dave Adams by a margin of more than 11-to-1.

Morson and Goldberg received 284 and 280 votes respectively. Adams got 24 votes.

District 17

First-time candidate Lewis Finkel, a volunteer with local community organizations like the Ferguson Library and Stamford Public Education Foundation, and incumbent Bobby Pavia, who has been on the BOR since 2021, won in their district over Sean Boeger, an incumbent BOR member from District 15 since 2021, and Rosa Colon, a veterinary student.

Pavia and Finkel obtained 168 and 157 votes respectively while Colon got 49 votes followed by Boeger with 38 votes.

Boeger and Colon previously ran unsuccessfully for the DCC in March 2024.

Latest Defeat for Reform Stamford

Most of the losing candidates in the primary have been aligned in recent years with Reform Stamford, a group that gained support after the 2017 Democratic Primary for Board of Representatives but whose power has been vastly diminished after recent elections. The results are just the newest electoral blow to the faction.

In 2023, they vocally backed the controversial charter revision ballot measure that was voted down by city residents by a margin of 57% to 43%.

A few months later, a slate backed by Mayor Caroline Simmons and other local officials won almost every race for the DCC against a Reform-supported group.

In August 2024, community advocate Eilish Collins Main beat incumbent State Representative David Michel, a Reform Stamford co-founder, in the Democratic Primary. Then-Board of Representatives member Jonathan Jacobson defeated incumbent State Representative Anabel Figueroa, an embattled candidate closely aligned with Reform Stamford as a Board of Representatives member, in the Democratic Primary.

Collins Main and Jacobson went on to win their general election races and currently serve in the Connecticut House of Representatives.

In addition to the Board of Representatives, there will also be elections for mayor, town clerk, constable, the Board of Education, and the Board of Finance.
