Stamford Native Appointed Fire Department Chief by Mayor Simmons
Interim no longer, new FD head ready to lead the city's firefighters in the new year and beyond
STAMFORD — One of the most important roles in the city has now been filled. After an exhaustive search and interview process was conducted, Mayor Caroline Simmons announced Rex Morris as the new Stamford Fire Department chief on Monday, January 8.
“I am pleased to appoint Chief Rex Morris to the role of Fire Chief for the Stamford Fire Department,” Simmons said. “With a career in the fire service that spans over 50 years, I am confident that Chief Morris has the qualifications, expertise, and professionalism to lead the Stamford Fire Department and I look forward to working with him in this permanent capacity.”
Morris, who had been serving in the role on an interim basis since October 2023, will continue his decades of public service in the firefighting profession in the city where he was born and began his firefighting work.
Starting in 2014, Morris began his tenure as the Stamford Fire Department’s Assistant Chief of Volunteer Services, overseeing both command and control of the city’s five volunteer fire companies. Spanning more than five decades of fire service, he has served in numerous leadership roles with the New York City Fire Department, including Captain and Company Commander of Rescue 1, Captain of Ladder Company 28, and Lieutenant of Ladder 44 and Engine 42.
"I am proud and honored to be placed in command of such a great organization. Stamford is where I started my fire department career here," Chief Morris said. "I want to thank the officers and members of the Stamford Fire Department for their support during my interim time and especially to Mayor Simmons for her support and confidence in me."
Members of the public safety and firefighting community in Stamford applauded the Mayor’s selection of Morris as well.
"I want to congratulate Chief Morris on his appointment," Director of Public Safety, Health, and Welfare Lou DeRubeis said. "I look forward to working with Chief Morris, the Fire Command Staff, and the men and women of the Stamford Fire Department as we continue to enhance fire operations and safety in the City of Stamford."
Reacting to the announcement, the Stamford Professional Fire Fighters Association added their approval, stating “We look forward to meeting these challenges together. Simply put, Chief Morris’ qualifications for this role cannot be overstated.”
